In the piece Sharecropper, located in The Morris Museum of Art Marie Atkinson hull depicted the plight and strife of a husbandman from The swell Depression whose lined and weathered grammatical construction and knotted workforce illustrate a biography spent toiling in the fields directly behind him. His close bond and association to the land is emphasized and echoed in the striking similarity of colorise used to represent the farmer and his livelihood. This is a man back up and owned by the land he works. As a sharecropper who rents the land he works in alter for a percentage of the crop he produces, regardless of his success, the farmer seems to know he will forever be terpsichore to this unforgiving lifestyle. Still, his piercing blue eyes suggest his merry character. The period of time that is tied to this particular piece is the bully Depression. This was a period of strife and great loss and in the 1930s the Great Depression raged throughout America, creating crippling privation and widespread unemployment in America, most notably and predominantly in regions such as the Deep South and Midwest. American artists such as Marie Hull chose to represent and bring to tangible life the people of these hard times.

As an artist she captures a face and an expression beautifully of what the average blue collar proletarian went through, and I believe this captures the essence of the Great Depression go bad than any history lesson or lecture can. Marie Hull, back in the time of the depression knew how scarce monetary means were and in order to continue working she actually paid sharecroppers and the clownish poor to pose for her portraits as she worked on commissions. What I genuinely appreciated and loved about this piece was just the realism involved.
