The Universal Moral Relativism of Todays Society SOC120 Instructor: Theodore Framan 30 April 2012 In the article Some Moral Minima, Lee E. Goodman goes to most lengths to define what he believes to be four large acts of honorable dilemma that be present in our society today. (1) genocide, politic everyy induced famine, and germ strugglefare; (2) terrorism, hostage taking, and child warriors; (3) slavery, polygamy, and incest; and (4) transport and female genital cutting. (Goodman, 2010, pg 88) These four truths are described in some detail and differ in many ways when it comes to certain cultures and societies but I agree with the thoughts behind them and telephone that Goodman is correct in his theories behind universal moral requirements that should be followed in every society and/or culture more or less the world. What I like closely this article is that these four dim-witted truths are very much black and white, leaving no room for some political or cultural grayish area but as history and society shows, its all relative and as stated in chapter one, the view of estimable relativism regards values as determined by ones own ethical standards, often those provided by ones own culture and background.

Rather than insisting that there are moral absolutes, moral claims must be interpreted in terms of how they reflect a persons standpoint; moral claims are then said to be respectable in a given culture or upon for a given society. (Mosser, 2010) The first moral dilemma would have with genocide and is defined as a deliberate and domineering destruction of a group of individuals, bases solely on ethnics, race, religion, or group affiliation. This act is usually referred to in acts of war but it can just as easily be labeled as mass murder and that murder is wrong because it destroys a human subject. (Goodman, 2010.
