Gustave Courbet I have n forever heard the phrase by Gustave, Show me an angel, and I pull up stakes paint on. I am not even sure where to even stock in explaining what I think he meant by this. Or maybe he wasnt a very religious man and he didnt believe there was such a thing as God or angels. And in this quote he state that if he ever saw one he would believe in them and paint them in order to draw his belief. As you can see there are so many different things Gustave could have meant. Upon further research I found that Gustave was a very controversial man as an artist and a political figure. So he said this quote to remove under someone skin and scrap their beliefs against his. During his era artist was starting to challenge what was an appropriate effect matter for art. Gustave is widely known for pushing that limit on what was appropriate what wasnt appropriate.

He believed in painting whatever his imagination led him to paint. Which certain people wasnt do for, this lead to what we know as Realism. Courbet was limited to the realities of contemporary manner in his art and he didnt like this at all. His quote showed how smart he really was.
