Jean Piagets Theory December 18, 2011 The American inheritance lexicon defines the word cognition as the mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning and judgment, (Cognition). Piagets Cognitive Developmental system was a rare supposition at the time when it was developed. It was the porta in depth speculation on the subject and remained the bar of the field for a long time. Throughout this paper, Piagets theory will be broken down into its four stages. The prepare of this paper is to see how well Piagets ideas hold up through out time and see what improvements can be made to the existing theory. Piaget stated that there were four lease cognitive stages in logical development, related to four consequent forms of knowledge. During each of these stages, children were hypothesized to think and reason in a versatile way. These stages, and their approximate ages of occurrence, wer e: the sensory-motor period (0-2 years), the period of pre- trading operations (2-7 years), the period of concrete operations (7-11 years) and the period of formal operations (11-12 years on).

Piaget recognized that the encyclopedism of each new way of thinking would not needs be synchronous across all the different domains of thought. The ages of readiness that Piaget gave for the different cognitive stages are only approximations.
