The Old Man
Three drunk rioters embark on a quest to consider wipe forbidden, after one of their friends passes away. They do so, more thanover find Death in a way more evasive then expected. In The Pardoners story by Geoffrey Chaucer, a humble, hopeful, and wise anile man exemplifies Death through his rather peculiar and seemingly unimportant actions.
The grizzly man is humble through his words. Who humbly greeted them and thus began, / paragon look to you, my lords, and give you quiet!â¦And so may deity be with you, gentlemen, / For I must go whither I bewilder to go(lines 106-107, 142-143). It is apparent in these lines that the emeritus man does not consider himself to be great. Who humbly greeted themâ¦God look to you, my lords shows that the antiquated man respects the rioters, although he does not know them. â¦may God be with youâ¦For I must go decrease I have to go shows that the old man believes that what he does and where he goes is not important.
The anticipation of death is revealed through the old mans pleas. And crying, Mother, open to me briefly! / Look at me, mother, wont you let me in? / See how I wither, flesh and blood and skin! / alas! When will these swot be laid to rest (lines 124-127)? These lines clearly show that the old man desperately wishes for death to take him. And crying, Mother, open to me soon!

His crying also shows his state of sincere despair. Alas! When will these bones be laid to rest? is his net plea. The tone seems to change from a quiet despair to a resentment toward Death.
The wise, old man speaks of Death and offers advice, but the rioters do not listen carefully to what he has to say.
